Special Issue Introduction

Big data brings the promise of new insights and efficiencies in various applications. However, the security and privacy concerns related to big data processing threaten to slow down the adoption of big data analytics. The recent scandal involving Cambridge Analytica offers insights into the dark side of big data and illustrated the risks of exposing information. In an era of big data, security and privacy concerns have been growing in a wide range of domains, including industrial, medical and public health, government, and business. The rapid development and deployment of blockchain-based technologies further add to the complexity of the problem. These concerns lie in different stages of data processing, ranging from data collection and communication to storage, analytics and consumption of data. This JSSS special issue aims to provide a platform for researchers to present the state-of-the-art technologies addressing the security and privacy concerns and challenges that arise from the big data properties such as volume, velocity, variety, veracity, and their combinations. We welcome articles on big data security and privacy.

Areas of interest for this special journal issue include, but are not limited to, the following topics:
● Defense against training data pollution attacks
● Data sanity checks to improve the quality of learning samples
● Data encryption for unstructured data
● Data Analysis over encrypted/perturbed data
● Secure distributed processing of tokenized data
● Privacy Preserving techniques in data collection
● Side-channel information attacks on big data applications, and defenses
● Algorithms for information fusion over data from unreliable sources
● New forms of abuse and countermeasures
● Usability and Privacy Controls
● Big data approaches to identify piracy, unauthorized data, fake news
● Detection of high-risk situations, including heightened risk for self-harm, online bullying, critical trust erosion
● Using Big Data to counter deception and abuse
● State-sponsored attacks on critical infrastructure
● Security and privacy related to NFTs, smart contracts and blockchain technology in general
